Photos taken on set during filming of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War have recently resurfaced, making it clear that some of the work for this year’s Avengers: Endgame was done at the same time. This movie’s been kept notoriously quiet, but these photos may offer some clues.
Mysteries are swirling about how the franchise will wrap up its epic adventure after last year’s film saw big bad Thanos destroy half of Earth’s population with the snap of his fingers. The smart money says that advanced time and space travel may be the tools the remaining Avengers need to defeat Thanos – these photos agree.
For a guy who made no appearance in Infinity War, Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, played by Paul Rudd, shows up a lot in some of these location shots. He’s seen here below, apparently in the middle of battle alongside fellow heroes Captain America, Iron Man, and the Hulk, (all pre CGI, just imagine huge muscles and egos where all the dots are.)
The camera is clearly rolling, and it looks like the four are on a New York City set, a location where fans have yet to see these heroes.
Speculation has all but confirmed that the Quantum Realm, explored extensively in Ant-Man and the Wasp, will play a large role in Endgame’s resolution. More evidence for that theory is found in close up shots of this same sequence. All four heroes are equipped with some kind of gadget looking device on their wrists.
Could this be a way to link to the Quantum Realm? They do kind of look like Ant-Man’s size controls, maybe a handful of Avengers will take advantage of the Pym particle and shrink down to change time and defeat Thanos? The plot thickens.
In still more photos, wardrobe is also specifically observed of Chris Hemsworth dressed up as a version of Thor no one has seen since his second movie. Shot alongside Tom Hiddleston’s Loki here, both characters’ looks have changed dramatically since these styles. In fact, Loki died in the opening minutes of Infinity War anyway, without anything that looked like that mask across his face. A trip to the early days of the MCU seems imminent.
The last clues offered by this set of preliminary behind the scenes photos for Endgame is a peaceful shot of Don Cheadle and Karen Gillan, apparently already in wardrobe, on their phones in between scenes. For now, the world can only wonder the stories they acted out that day, but these shots definitely suggest the outline of a project long in the making.
With the release of Captain Marvel on this weekend, fans who hoped for another piece to the puzzle were disappointed. While the film does explain how Carol Danvers becomes Marvel’s most powerful hero – capable of answering the distress call placed in Infinity War’s end credits scene – the escape from Thanos’ horrible deed still remains one of the greatest cliffhangers in modern franchise history.
