New photos from the Birds of Prey set surfaced, continuing the early publicity campaign for the latest DCEU cinema experiment. Lately Marvel’s distinguished competition has been throwing projects at the wall just to see what sticks. In between juggling multiple Jokers and reassembling the Justice League in as many ways as possible, the DCEU looks like they’re really stepping up with this one to create the darkest, freshest, superhero story yet.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), as the full title goes, somehow became even wackier with these new photos. The pics show Harley, in full costume, walking out of a grocery store, with a shopping cart full of snacks and supplies for crimefighting (or maybe committing).

If these photos are anything to judge by, (not to mention that title), this movie is planning to show us a lot of Harley Quinn. Maybe she’s on something of a crime spree in addition to her shopping spree. Here, she’s in striped shorts, suspenders, and a shirt with her name all over it. Additional photos show a Ella Jay Basco aka Cassandra Cain walking out of the store alongside Harley. According to IMDB, Quinn with be partnering up with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save this little girl from an evil crime lord.

Other than these and a couple of other early production photos that give us a first look at the super team itself, not much is known about the coming film. A Harley Quinn solo movie, a Joker movie, plans for Suicide Squad 2, and even the Justice League, somehow, have all been raised as projects that could capitalize on Margot Robbie’s breakout performance in the first Suicide Squad.

Margot Robbie Serves Margaritas as Harley Quinn on ‘Birds of Prey’ Set

It sounds like Birds of Prey was the project that came together easiest. Take a few minor characters, throw them together in a belovedly clever team name, throw them alongside the hottest antiheroine in the game, and add in Ewan McGregor as the villain. Checks a lot of boxes.

Birds of Prey is scheduled for release on February 7, 2020. It’s being directed by Cathy Yan from a script written by Christina Hodson. Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez are cast as Helena Bertinelli, Dinah Lance, and Renee Montoya. Ewan McGregor and Chris Messina star as villains Black Mask and Victor Zsasz.
